How the Very Essence of Life Became a Hassle!

Note: "Read carefully, and write your viewpoint about this argument"*

Once upon a time there was a little goldfish, whose biggest paradox of life rested in the name: GOLDFISH!
"How is that? My cousin is white, my pal is orange, the mayor is black, I am red and we are all goldfish!?" she pondered. "What about Sisy, the gold goldfish!? Isn't there any difference? shouldn't there be any difference?"

That was, simply, how racism, prejudice, able-ism, face-ism and many more, appeared in the underwater world.

For thousands of years, the goldfish fight for their standpoints, insisting they are Right! Poor goldfish don't read their college books thoroughly, so they may never have the chance to read Locke's idea of no single and ultimate truth. They may never think of Einstein's relativism. They may never think of themselves as goldfish rather than a red goldfish, a black one or a white one!

  1. Dear Laleh
Thank you so much for sharing such a nice and deep story!
The moral must be that not reading the books thoroughly will definitely cause some irreparable damage!!! ;)
(well, since most of the invited authors are students, I concluded some didactic lessons!)

I do agree with the racial discrimination which undermines our "one-ness" indeed. You put it nicely dear.

  2. Dear Mitra,

    Thanks for your comment.

Honestly, I didn't mean to give any direct didactic lesson. However, the teachers' job is to teach! and as far as you are a teacher -a very kind and nice one, of course-, I don't mind if you extract such a moral from it. :)

Moreover, This story is supposed to be controvertial, so that people (readers and writers) may discuss the argumentative notions.

  5. Perhaps, our little goldfish should know it is not important what it is. Every thing that she is,it is just a gift from God.
It is important what she will be in hre life and through this way,she can tell God Thank you.
But it is possible, the little goldfish can't
understand any philosophical and spiritual topics. It's just enough to take a glance at her friends that they are shinig in the light of sun.

  6. Race, color, language and … are the essences and principles in the life of the goldfish. This is how she knows herself , this is how she finds herself through these differences. And also it clear that she doesn’t believe in Fanaticism.

  9. I do agree the idea of Difference is the essence of life. it is something that shows our Identity. It is a real fact of existence, and should be exist. But the problem is the value, which societies and cultures give to this difference. It causes discrimination.
I mean as Saussure said" the bond between the signifier(sound image, word, here golden fish) and signified(concept, object, here fish as an animal)is arbitrary. there is no natural intrinsic,or a logical relation between signifier(word) and signified(object). this arbitrary of sign explains why language as a system can only arise in social relation.
Value is thus defined as the collective meaning assigned to signs. the value of sign is determined, however, not by what signifier get linked to what signified but rather by the whole system of signs used within a community.
Saussur distinguish between Value and Signification. Signification is the relation established between sfrs and sfds ,value, by contrast,is the relation between various signs within the signifiers system.
So the difference between objects(things)is one of the real fact in our world, but the name or the value is something that our culture and society give us and they do not have essential validity.
Difference causes that we realize the concept of otherness. As Lacan said" each sex can only see(or signify) the otherness by the other sex".
As a conclusion I want to say, if we respect and realize this difference,we will understand others, therefor the world could be a better place to live.
